After toying with the idea of doing an easy hike for Canada Day, we decided to head up Golden Ears, which happens to be one of the most difficult trails around. Golden Ears is the massive group that dominates Maple Ridge, some 40 km east of Vancouver. The trail is very rough, with plenty of rocks and roots. Although it is 10 km long, it gains 800 of its 1,000 metres of elevation in just 3 km. We came within one km of the top, but were stopped by steep slopes of lingering snow. Well, an excuse to go back!
